What are EMFs and How to They Affect Us?

You may not see them, but electromagnetic fields (EMFs) are everywhere in the modern-day environment. Your laptop, mobile phone, microwave, wifi router—all of these emit EMFs. So, what are EMFs, and how do they affect us? Let's take a deeper look at EMFs and the impact they have on our bodies.

What are EMFs?

EMFs are invisible electrical and magnetic fields created by electronic devices that emit radiation. Every electronic device emits EMF radiation, but it's important to note that not all radiation is harmful. Most appliances emit low-level EMF radiation that is considered harmless to humans.

How are EMFs harmful?

Some electronic devices, typically those with higher levels of energy consumption, emit high levels of EMF radiation, which can be dangerous to humans if exposed for long periods of time or in close proximity. Harmful EMFs are also known as 'dirty electricity'. Examples include mobile phones and wifi routers, both of which emit high levels of non-ionising radiation that can penetrate the body's cells and tissues. Using a mobile phone is a good example of how high-level EMFs can be harmful. Have you ever noticed your ears going red after a phone call? This is due to the high frequencies and short wavelengths. Fifth-generation (5G) mobile phones have a frequency spectrum of 24–47 GHz.

What is the difference between EMFs and PEMFs?

PEMF technology uses EMFs, but the two main differences between harmful and harmless EMFs are frequency and wavelengths. Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) technology safely pulses electromagnetic fields at low frequencies and long wavelengths. These frequencies are similar to the earth’s PEMFs and the frequencies our cells require for normal biological functioning. EMFs are significantly higher frequencies and shorter wavelengths. For example, the earth’s natural electromagnetic frequency is approximately 7.8Hz, which is substantially lower than the 5G mobile phone frequency of up to 47GHz.

The negative effects of EMFs

While studies are ongoing regarding the negative effects of EMF exposure, evidence suggests that long-term exposure to high levels of non-ionising radiation can cause serious health issues such as sleep disturbances, headaches, DNA damage, weakened immune systems, infertility issues, chronic illnesses and more. It is especially important for children to be protected from excessive exposure as their developing bodies may be more vulnerable to the adverse effects of EMF radiation than those of adults.

How to protect yourself from excessive exposure to EMFs

If you're concerned about your exposure to electromagnetic fields, it's best to attempt to limit your exposure wherever possible. Ways to limit your EMF exposure can include:

  • Avoiding carrying your mobile phone close to your body (e.g., in a pocket)
  • Keeping laptops away from your body while using them
  • Limiting wifi usage in enclosed spaces like bedrooms or offices
  • Turning off any electronics when not in use (e.g., laptop, microwave)
  • Using an EMF shield or detector for further protection against excessive exposure
  • Avoiding excessive and unnecessary use of technology, i.e., watching tv in your bedroom or before you sleep, scrolling on your phone as you wake up, etc

Why use a PEMF mat?

Using PEMF technology such as a PEMF mat may return your body and mind to a natural frequency state. Using low-frequency PEMFs may normalise brain activity and cellular function that might have been impacted by harmful EMFs. Healthy doses of PEMF can activate the parasympathetic nervous system (PSNS), helping us enter a state of relaxation and recovery.

Radiate health and avoid harmful EMFs

We encounter electromagnetic fields every day from our laptops and mobile phones to our microwaves and wifi routers. So, it’s important we understand how these invisible forces could potentially affect us over time if we’re exposed for too long or too closely. While everyone should make an effort to limit their exposure whenever possible, such as limiting wifi usage indoors, investing in an EMF shield and incorporating a PEMF mat into your routine could provide peace of mind for those who want to counteract the excessive EMF exposure and feel more connected to nature.
